Microgaming, who more-or-less invented the concept of online casinos, has a long history of creating original products. When they released Fortunium, they really excelled themselves. It’s such an original slot game that we struggle to place it in a genre; the closest we can get is saying that it’s clearly designed by steampunk imagery and ideas. We shouldn’t give Microgaming all the credit for it - it’s a collaborative work with a newer developer called Stormcraft - but it takes vision to bring something that feels so new to the market, and we salute them for it.
Game Summary
Fortunium isn't just the name of this Mobile Slots game; it's also the name of the city which serves as the slot's location. Fortunium is a city of the future, set in an alternative universe where steam power was never replaced by electricity. This is a common idea within science fiction books and movies. Will Smith's often-derided ‘Wild Wild West' from the late 1990s belongs to the same genre. Steampunk is rich with innovative design ideas, which means Fortunium looks nothing like any other slot game we've ever played.
Stormcraft clearly fell in love with designing this futuristic cityscape; so much so that they've arguably given away too much of the playing area to it. The 5x5 layout of reels and rows requires a lot of space to operate, and it feels a little cramped in the center of the screen. The smoky silhouette of Fortunium, with its high-rise structures, is undeniably dramatic and atmospheric, but we could probably have done with a bit less of it in view. On the other hand, the vaguely-claustrophobic feel of the reels might have been a stylistic choice. The atmosphere of the slot is a little intimidating and tense, with a haunting piano track adding to that feeling. The soundtrack has epic properties, and wouldn't sound out of place in a movie. John Williams would be proud.
Fortunium Mobile Setup
Given that this is a slot set in the future, we’d have been happier if we didn’t see playing card symbols on the reels, but we’ll at least give Stormcraft credit for using the suits of the cards rather than J, Q, and so on. The four suits make up the lowest value symbols, sitting behind a hot air balloon (the only way to take to the skies in a steampunk city!), a treasure chest, and a futuristic gun. The city’s two owners Maximilian and Victoria, are the most valuable symbols in the whole slot. They stack wherever they appear.
A large, golden ‘W’ (think the McDonalds logo upside down) is the wild here, and it will replace everything other than the scatter to create winning lines for you. The scatter is a sinister-looking green sphere which is somewhere between a jewel and an eye.
There’s nothing routine about the look and feel of anything in this slot, and that extends to the bonus features.
Bonus Features
Fortunium offers two bonus features, with a third bonus option which is there if you wish to take it.
The first bonus is Mystery Symbols, which might appear on any spin at random. They’re represented by a question mark, but when the reels stop spinning and everything settles, they’ll burst open and transform into a matching set of symbols. They can take the shape of anything apart from the scatter symbol. Mystery symbols always arrive as a stack, so there’s plenty of scope for them to help you with wins whenever they turn up.
The scatter symbol can provide you with access to the slot’s Free Spins offering. Three of them are enough to trigger the round, and get you ten free spins. You’re stuck with ten free spins no matter how many scatters triggered the round, but there are advantages to be had by finding more than three.
With three scatter symbols involved, the second reel is guaranteed to be full of mystery symbols on every spin. A fourth scatter will make the same true of the third reel. If you find all five scatters at once, all three middle reels will be made of matching symbols, and your luck should really be in. You’ll receive one additional free spin every time you find a scatter symbol while the round is active.
We mentioned an optional extra bonus, and that’s the Win Booster. You can use it any time you like at the cost of 1.5x your line bet, by pressing the relevant button next to the reels. It doesn't change the frequency at which mystery symbols appear, but it does guarantee that when they do turn up, they'll either be high-value symbols or wild symbols. That means everything you win as a result will be maximized in terms of value. It's a classic case of high rewards for high stakes!
Fortunium is one of the most excitingly original Mobile Slots that came out during 2018. It’s genuinely exciting to play, and sophisticated in the way it makes use of its bonus features. We suspect that it won’t be for everybody, but if you find that you like it, we suspect that you’ll be coming back to the city regularly.
About the Mobile Slots Developer - Microgaming
While it’s Microgaming’s name on the ‘label’ of this slot, Stormcaft Studios are the development team who put it together. We’re hoping that it was a statement of intent from Stormcraft; this is the very first online slot they ever released, and if they’re going to push design boundaries as hard as this every time then we suspect they’re a company with a very exciting future.
Stormcraft opened in 2016, and operate from South Africa. At the time of writing, they’re in an exclusive partnership with Microgaming, and don’t publish any slots outside of Microgaming or under their own name. The partnership with the larger firm makes it easier for them to gain access to the lucrative UK Mobile Slots market, as well as larger distribution across the world.
Their mission statement seems very consistent with what we’ve seen of them so far; they say they want to create unforgettable slot games and shock the industry, going on to say that their musicians and concept artists are as important to them as their programmers. As well as this release, they also had a hand in the design of Agent Jane Blonde Returns Mobile Slots Game for their parent company, as well as the lesser-known Dragon Shard. We’re looking forward to seeing what this company has up their sleeve for the years to come.
