In the grand and rich history of video games, there are probably only two characters who can claim to be more famous than 'Tomb Raider' star Lara Croft - Mario, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Lara Croft has entranced players - especially male players, it must be said - ever since she made her first appearance in the Eidos series of games back on the very first PlayStation in 1996. Since then she's gone on to star in more than ten further games, and been played on the big screen by Angelina Jolie. It's fair enough to describe her as something of an icon.
Game Summary
Anything that makes it big in the video game world inevitably arrives in the world of UK Mobile Slots eventually, and so here we are with Microgaming's Lara Croft: Temples and Tombs, released in May 2019. Interestingly, there's no mention of 'Tomb Raider' anywhere within the slot, so we can't decide whether there was a trademark issue, or whether it was just cheaper to license the 'Lara Croft' name than to go for an all-out 'Tomb Raider' slot. It doesn't really matter - she has such mainstream appeal that everybody knows who she is and what she does.
The slot that bears Lara's name comes with five reels and three rows, within which there are 243 paylines to play for. It's possible to reach that total because the slot doesn't follow the usual rules when it comes to counting wins; just having a set of three or more matching symbols on reels which are adjacent is good enough for them to be counted. You don't have to worry about lining them up perfectly. Those reels are set, as they should be, within the confines of a tomb. The blueness of the surrounding brickwork suggests that it's nighttime, but Lara has found a way to break into the illuminated vault, within which the reels spin. Based on the content of those reels, we'd say that the slot is based in Egypt.
Fans of Lara will be hoping to see plenty of her in the slot, and they won’t be disappointed. The least valuable symbols are a bottle of water, a torch, a grappling hook, and a backpack - the essential tools you’ll need for a good night of raiding tombs. Above them are two animal-headed Egyptian Gods, and then Lara herself in four different poses, including one on a motorbike.
Anybody who's played Egyptian-themed UK Mobile Slots - of which there are many - will have seen the symbol of the ankh before. In Lara Croft: Temples and Tombs, it's the wild symbol. You'll only ever find it on the middle three reels, but when it does turn up, it will replace all the other base game symbols to finish off winning lines for you. The exception to that rule is the bonus symbol, which is Lara's personal diary.
Bonus Features
Anybody who’s played the videogames will know that Lara is quite the adventurer, so it just wouldn’t be a good use of the license if we didn’t have some adventurous bonus features in this slot to keep us entertained! Fortunately, we have a whole trio of them.
The first is Collapsing Wins, which is a neat feature that helps you to get on a roll. With collapsing wins, you'll see the symbols which have made up your last win crumble away and vanish after the win has been counted up. New replacement symbols will then fall onto the reels from above, and they can create new wins without you needing to spin the reels again. Best of all, if you can string a few of these wins together, a multiplier comes to life! Each consecutive win increases the multiplier applied by 1x, up to a maximum of 5x in any one sequence.
The Jackpot Prize in this slot is all about the wild symbols - sometimes, they come with tiny coins attached to them. Whenever that happens, the coins will be stripped away from the wilds, and land in a pot above the reels. There's no surefire way to trigger the jackpot prize, but getting plenty of coins into that pot helps. The top prize available within the jackpot game is a massive x5000 multiplier, but all the prizes on offer are big multipliers regardless.
Lara’s Free Spins feature is a little vanilla when taken at face value, but it combines with the collapsing wins bonus to make things more exciting. Land three bonus symbols to get it started, for which you’ll get eight free spins. You can trigger this feature again while it’s in play, by landing a further three diary bonus symbols.
All in all, this is an entertaining and exciting Mobile Slots game. Lara is as attractive as ever, collapsing wins mean that any little win can be instantly followed by a big one, and the jackpot game is worth hanging around to see for yourself. If this slot was a tomb, it would definitely be worth raiding!
About the Mobile Slots Developer - Triple Edge Studios
We're seeing the development of Triple Edge Studios play out in real time. They're a very young company, with a mere five slots currently available. Behind the scenes, though, they have some excellent and experienced staff who they've attracted from elsewhere. That explains the quality of their slots; Bookie of Odds Mobile Slots Game, and Ancient Fortunes: Zeus Online Slot, in particular, have been very well received by players everywhere, including here at Amigo Slots.
At the time of writing, any Mobile Slots game created by Triple Edge Studios is published by Microgaming, thanks to a partnership that's been struck up between the smaller company and the much larger one. Microgaming has unveiled a series of such partnerships during the last two years. It helps small companies enhance their reputation and reach wider audiences, while at the same time allowing Microgaming to expand their own platform and Mobile Slots offerings exponentially. In business terms, it's a classic 'win-win' scenario.
